Solution
This is an ongoing project but to date, I have created a series of fixed animations for three different types of announcements: important information, award winners and office updates. For the announcements, I decided it would be more efficient to split the animation into two parts. By utilising the fixed animations for introducing and closing the announcement clip whilst using a presentation format for the written announcement in a similar style, this allows designated employees to easily change the announcement content. This means the TVs can always display the latest information without any major animation changes.
Additionally, I created a placeholder animation for when the content is being updated for the TV. This was to show viewers that new content is coming but also stop any out-of-date content from being displayed in the meantime.
For the colour scheme, I tried to keep it as close to the company's brand colours so that it was familiar with the rest of the imagery around the office and fitted into the office space.
Thoughts
This is fun side project to be working on, when I can, as it gives me a chance to explore creating animations and is a different way to display company information. The at-a-glance concept is not a new one but the target audience is different which presents a different challenge for me. This audience is a moving one and the goal is to draw them in and away from where they are going to watch the screen. The animations need to capture the attention of a passerby and then keep them engaged to read what the information is about before they can continue what they are doing.
It has been technically challenging to get the timings right to create the right effect for the movement and transitions. At times it was frustrating but it was rewarding in the end, once I had achieved the desired result.
I'm looking forward to applying what I have learnt into expanding interaction design in projects I'm working on and creating more animations for this project.
